BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University softball team will serve as the No. 7 seed in this week's 2017 Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament and will take on No. 10 Benedictine on Wednesday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m. to open up the event.
The Wildcats are 25-24 on the year, while the Ravens enter the week with a record of 21-24.
Baker went 1-3 against the Ravens this season with a split on Mar. 12 in Atchison, Kansas, winning game one, 6-4, before falling in game two, 6-4.
On Apr. 23, the Ravens came to Cavaness Field to face the Wildcats on Baker's Senior Day and swept the 'Cats, 3-2 and 8-2.
Baker features arguably the top pitcher in the Heart in sophomore Olivia Brees. She is Baker's single season all-time leader in strikeouts with 272 this season and she leads the conference in opponent batting average at .174.
Brees is second in the conference in ERA at 1.55. Three Wildcats post a batting average above .300, as Stephanie Cardona leads the squad at .375, Madison Allen is next at .319 and Hannah Flynn is batting .310.
The Ravens feature four players that bat above .300 and hit .280 as a team. Lindsey Proffitt leads the team with a .346 batting average and Sarah Methvin has a team-high eight home runs.
Benedictine has hit 22 home runs as a team this season, Baker has hit 16 this season with six coming from Cardona and four from freshman Riley Swickard.
The Baker pitching staff ranks No. 3 in the NAIA in total strikeouts with 347. And Brees' hits allowed per game ranks No. 9 in the country at 4.45.
With a victory over BC, Baker would take on No. 2 Clarke on Thursday, May 4 at 12:30 p.m. A loss would end the Wildcats' season.
