Miguel Regalado to Serve as Clarke University's First Head Coach
BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – 2016 Heart of America Athletic Conference Southern Division Assistant Football Coach of the Year, Miguel Regalado announced today he will leave his post as Baker University's offensive coordinator and strength & conditioning coordinator to become Heart of America Athletic Conference member Clarke University's first-ever head football coach.
Clarke's Board of Trustees voted in January 2015 to add football to the institution's intercollegiate lineup.
Clarke will offer a scrimmage schedule in the fall of 2018 and will start varsity competition in fall 2019.
"My family and I would like to thank our Baker University family and the Baldwin City community for an amazing 9 years," said Regalado.
"Under the leadership of Dr. Lynne Murray, Athletic Director Theresa Yetmar, Head Football Coach Mike Grossner, and the best coaching staff in the country, Baker football has once again become a NAIA power and I have no doubt it will continue on this path well into the future.
"I especially want to thank every Wildcat that has come through our program since 2008. I will always be thankful for your hard work and dedication to making Baker University and it's football program so special."
Regalado joined the Baker coaching staff in 2008 and has served as Baker's offensive coordinator since the 2011 season.
Under his leadership with the offense, his group reached unprecedented heights in 2016, as Baker won a school record 14 games and reached just its second-ever NAIA-FCS National Championship game.
The Baker Football team broke 25 records in 2016 and its 14-1 record are the most wins in a season in the programs history.
The offensive unit broke some impressive records along the way including quarterback Logan Brettell who collected the most total yards by a player in a single season with 5,371 and he was named Baker's first-ever NAIA National Player of the Year.
Wide receiver Quanzee Johnson also broke the single season receiving yards record with 1,134 yards and running back Cornell Brown broke the single season receptions record with 95. Fellow receiver Clarence Clark is now Baker's all-time leader in receptions with 185 and receiving yards with 3,054 in just three seasons.
During Regalado's stint at Baker, the Wildcats fashioned an 81-25 overall record, posted three 10 or more win seasons, made five NAIA national playoff appearances and captured three Heart of America Athletic Conference championships.
"I knew this day was coming, but I always tried to keep him with us for the next season," said Baker head football coach Mike Grossner. "Miguel Regalado gave us all he had everyday in his nine year Baker career. He will continue to do just that until this summer comes around.
"The opportunity that lies ahead is a dream of many coaches. He gets to start a football program from the ground up; with an administration and community that is excited to bring football to their institution. We will miss them dearly, but are so happy for Miguel and his family! It makes me so proud to see former players have great accomplishments in their lives. Loyalty and hard work is always rewarded. Thank you Miguel!"
Regalado will officially begin his duties on June 1.
