Six Home Runs Help Wildcats to Huge 22-10 Run-Rule of St. Mary
LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Picking up 28 hits in the game, six of which were home runs, the Baker baseball team exploded to run-rule St. Mary in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, 22-10 in just 8 innings.
Baker had 12 different players collect at least one hit in the game, while Brian Hawkins led the way with five hits in his six at-bats. Tanner Twillman was the only Baker Wildcat with four hits, while Quinton Graham, Tucker Flory and Jacob Ewell each had three hits.
Evan Gottstein was able to get the win for Baker, as he threw 3.2 innings and had four strikeouts, while Grabriel Lopez, Drake Seetin, Jake Jarrell and Ian Henricks combined for the other 4.1 innings.
It didn't take long for Baker to get things going in this one, hitting back-to-back home runs to lead off the game from Graham and Twillman as Baker took a 2-0 lead. After Flory followed with a double, Peyton Lewis singled to center field and gave Baker a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.
St. Mary was then able to get one back in the bottom of the second, but a double from Twillman got the run right back in the top of the second. Again, in bottom half, the Spires scored a run, but then Baker blew up for eight runs in the top of the third, highlighted by a home run from Brian Hawkins and a grand slam from Tucker Flory to make it 12-2 after just three innings.
After the Spires added three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Baker got those runs back plus two more in the top of the fifth, on another home run from Flory, a single from Parenti and two wild pitches. Hawkins also added his second home run of the game in the top of the sixth as Baker led, 18-5.
Baker added one run in the seventh on a Hawkins single, but the Spires were able to cut the lead to 19-10 in the bottom half to avoid the run-rule for the time being. Baker then scored three runs in the top of the eighth on hits from Ewell and Foss as Baker run-ruled St. Mary, 22-10.
Baker is now 12-8 on the season and remain at 4-0 in Heart of America play. They will be back in action on Monday, March 20, when they travel to Parkville, Mo., to take on Park University at 1:00 p.m., weather permitting.
