Wildcats Sweep Day Two vs. Park to Win Four-Game Series, 3-1
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – After splitting day one of the series, the Baker baseball team picked up a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday over Park to win the series, 3-1.
Caden Pogue got the start in game one of the day, throwing 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts, while Logan Whelan and Jake Miller combined to finish the final 2.1 innings. Offensively, Baker had nine hits in the game, as Quinton Graham went 3-for-4 to lead the team in hits, while Peyton Lewis went 2-for-4.
Baker got on the board early in this one, scoring two runs on a balk and a wild pitch to take an early 2-0 lead. After Park was able to take a 3-2 lead scoring two in the third and one in the fourth, a double steal and a single from Brian Hawkins gave Baker the lead right back, 4-3.
After Park was able to tie the game in the fifth, 4-4, Baker pushed the pedal down and rattled off six runs in the top of the sixth inning on hits from Cooper Karlin, Tucker Flory and Peyton Lewis to give the Wildcats a 10-4 win in game one.
Evan Gottstein pitched the first 2.2 innings of game two and Jared Parenti then pitched the next 3.1 innings before Luke Smith closed out the seventh. With eight different players picking up the team's 11 hits, Graham once again led the team with three hits, while John Raybourn was the only other Wildcat with a multi-hit game.
Just like the first game, Baker jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Park then tied the game at two in the bottom of the second. Just two innings later, the Pirates took the lead, 4-2, but after a single from Peyton Lewis in the fifth cut the lead to 4-3, Raybourn doubled down the right field line to score two and give the lead back to Baker, 5-4.
Park wouldn't go away quietly as they tied the game at five, but Quinton Graham hit a triple to right-center and after an error by the outfielder, came all the way around to score and regain the lead, 6-5. By the end of the sixth inning, Baker had stretched their lead to 9-5 on singles from Taylor Foss and Jared Parenti as they swept the doubleheader.
Baker is 15-9 on the season and 7-1 in Heart of America play. They currently sit in first place in the Heart of America South Division standings and will travel to Central Methodist on March 25-26 to take on the Eagles who are currently in second in the south division with a record of 4-2.
