Baker Drops Four Games to (RV) Central Methodist Over the Weekend

FAYETTE, Mo. – Coming off a hot start in conference play, the Baker baseball team lost four games to Central Methodist over the weekend by scores of 12-2, 8-5, 5-1 and 7-1.

Game One (L, 12-2)

Christian Spitz started game one for Baker, going 4.0 innings and collecting four strikeouts. Gabriel Lopez and Jake Jarrell then finished the final two innings for Baker. Offensively, Baker had just five hits, with five different players having one hit.

Through the first four innings, CMU held onto an early 8-0 lead, but doubles from Darwin Oleaga and Cooper Karlin was able to cut the lead to 8-2 after 4.5 innings. The Eagles then ran away with it after that, scoring two runs in the fifth and two runs in the sixth to win game one of the series, 12-2.

Game Two (L, 8-5)

Jaxon Kutch got the call in game two, as he threw 3.2 innings, while Logan Whelan and Jake Miller combined for the final 2.1 innings. Baker doubled their hit total from game one, picking up 10 hits while Quinton Graham, Brian Hawkins and Jared Parenti each had two-hit games.  

Once again, the Eagles jumped out to a large lead, holding a 7-0 lead after five innings. Brian Hawkins got Baker on the board in the top of the sixth on an infield single, but CMU got that run back in the bottom of the sixth on a home run to make it 8-1.

Baker got hot in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on a triple from Parenti, a double from Taylor Foss and a single from Hawkins to make it 8-5, but that is the closest Baker would get, falling in game two, 8-5.

Game Three (L, 5-1)

Moving into day two, Caden Pogue was the starter for Baker, going five innings, while Whelan finished the final inning. Baker only gave up six hits in the game, but came up short in the end.

With CMU holding onto a 4-0 lead after three, Jared Parenti gave Baker their only run of the game in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to cut the lead to 4-1. The Eagles got that run back in the bottom of the fourth on a sac-fly, but that is where the scoring would end as Baker lost game three, 5-1.

Game Four (L, 7-1)

Baker had four pitchers throw in game four including Evan Gottstein, Parenti, Luke Smith and Gabriel Lopez. Offensively, Baker had four hits with all four hits coming from John Raybourn and Javier Aguirre who each had two hits.

Baker once again fell behind early, as CMU jumped out to another 7-0 lead in the first four innings. Baker was able to get one run in the top of the sixth on an error, but eventually lost game four, 7-1.

Baker is now 15-13 on the season and 7-5 in Heart of America play. They will be back in action on Saturday, April 1, when they host Missouri Valley at 1 p.m., at Sauder Field.
