Wildcats Mount 22-Point Comeback to Knock Off Mustangs in Conference Opener

BALDWIN CITY - Baker men's basketball authored one of the most dramatic turnarounds in recent memory on Saturday, rallying from 22 points down early in the second half to stun Mount Mercy, 86-82, in the Heart opener inside the Collins Center.

The Wildcats stared at a 55-33 deficit early in the second half, yet slowly reeled the Mustangs back in behind seven second-half threes and their most efficient offensive stretch of the season. BU outscored the Mustangs 55-37 after halftime and saved its most crucial push for the last 90 seconds, when BU erased an 82-78 deficit and closed on an 8-0 burst, punctuated by a game-winning layup from Alex Gunnels, to lock down its first conference win of the season.

Baker finished the day shooting over 47 percent and pushed that number to nearly 60 percent in the second half, while the Mustangs dropped to well under 40 percent after the break. BU's 12 made threes at a 50 percent clip helped erase the gap, and the Wildcats added another boost at the line with a 10-for-13 stretch in the second half compared to Mount Mercy's overall mark of 69.6 percent.

Myles Tucker carried BU early with 14 of his 22 points coming in the first half, keeping BU within reach during its cold stretch, while Gunnels took over late with 15 second-half points on 6-of-7 shooting to anchor the comeback. Jimmy Dorsey added 17 points and seven rebounds, and the Wildcats rode a 34-5 bench scoring advantage that proved essential to the rally.

Baker opened the day looking sharp, scoring on four of its first six possessions and grabbing an early 6-2 lead behind finishes from Tucker and Gunnels. The Wildcats extended their edge by five and matched the Mustangs shot for shot through the first nine minutes. BU held Mount Mercy scoreless for a full two-minute stretch while building a 21-14 lead midway through the half.

The momentum swung over the next several sequences as Baker hit a prolonged cold spell, missing eight straight shots while the Mustangs assembled an 11-0 run to take the lead. BU worked the ball inside repeatedly but couldn't finish through contact, and several empty possessions widened the gap. Tucker's late three briefly steadied things, but the Wildcats entered halftime trailing 45-31 after shooting around 37 percent in the opening 20 minutes.

Out of the break, the margin quickly reached its peak at 55-33, giving Baker its steepest hole of the afternoon. Mo Niang rattled off eight quick points across a three-possession burst, including back-to-back threes and a pull-up jumper, to revive BU's offense. Baker held the Mustangs without a field goal for nearly two full minutes during this stretch, and several strong defensive rebounds launched transition pushes that trimmed the deficit to 66-49 entering the final 12 minutes.

Baker's perimeter shooting began to heat up from there as Gunnels splashed in a three from the wing at the 8:12 mark, then followed with a hard drive to cut it to 72-59. Dorsey knocked down a midrange jumper on the next trip before Tucker sprinted into a transition three at 4:54 to bring the Wildcats within single digits at 75-67. During this run, BU scored on five of six possessions and limited Mount Mercy to just three points over more than three minutes.

The Wildcats continued to climb back, with Gunnels knocking down another jumper and a breakaway finish from Cam Jones bringing the margin to eight with just over three minutes remaining. Dorsey muscled in a layup with 1:51 left to make it 82-78, and then tied the game less than a minute later with his first set of clutch makes from the line.

After two missed free throws from the Mustangs, Gunnels attacked the lane on the game's decisive possession and finished through traffic to give Baker its first lead since the opening minutes at 84-82 with 15 seconds left.

With the defense forcing a contested three on the ensuing trip, Dorsey sealed the comeback at the stripe, calmly sinking two free throws in the final seconds to secure the 86-82 win and punctuate a rally in which Baker held the Mustangs without a field goal over the final two minutes.

Winning its conference opener for the fourth straight season, Baker moves to 2-4 overall and begins a three-game road swing on Wednesday, Nov. 19 when the Wildcats travel to Park for their first Heart road matchup of the season.
