Wildcats Post Strong Performance at Baker University Spring Invite
LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Baker golf team hosted the Baker University Spring Invitational last week as the women finished fourth, while the men finished sixth.
Samantha Mitchell played two very strong rounds, posting a score of 78 in round one, followed by a 77 on day two to finish with a total of 155 to finish in second by just one stroke.
Emily Pennington also made the top-10, scoring an 84 on day one and shooting a career low 79 on day two to finish tied for seventh. Annamarie Raybourn finished 30th in the tournament while both Elaena Steffen and Hayli Daugherty finished tied for 35th.
"The women were led again by Sam Mitchell who came just one stroke away from a tie for first place," head coach Andy Kelley said. "Fellow senior Emily Pennington also had a career low 79 on day two. I'm excited for both teams to prepare and compete in their respective conference championships over the next two weeks and se how we stack up against our competition."
On the men's side, Mason Ahlberg played very consistent golf on the week, posting a 73 on day one and a 74 on day two to finish tied for eighth. Nick Delaquila came in second for the Wildcats as he tied for 24th, while teammate Kyle Barbee tied for 32nd.
Michael Secrest and Drew Sloyer rounded out the field for Baker, finishing 35th and 45th respectively.
Baker's junior varsity squad finished in ninth, as Preston Stanley finished tied for 17th with a total score of 151 in the tournament. Dawson Dykes, Thomas Taber and Deven Peters finished in 39th, 46th and 49th respectively.
"Both teams competed against a very talented field this last week," coach Kelley said. "In our final competitive week before our conference championships, we had some great individual performances. Mason Ahlberg had a top-10 finish with back-to-back solid rounds, and Preston Stanly anchored our JV team with the lowest score of his young collegiate career."
The women will be in action again April 23-25 for the Heart of America Conference Championships in Osage Beach, Mo., while the men will wait until April 29 to compete in the Heart Championships in Sunrise Beach, Mo.
