Halsey Becomes First Two-Time CoSIDA Academic All-American

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Austin Halsey of the Baker University men's soccer team has been named to the Google Cloud College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Second Team, announced on Monday.

After being named Academic All-District on Nov. 8, for the second time, Halsey has now been named to the Academic All-America Team for the second year in a row as he was named to the first team just a season ago.

Halsey now becomes the first Baker University student-athlete to be named to the NAIA Academic All-America team twice, and is also one of two Heart of America Athletes to be named to the team on the men's side this year as Grand View's Simone Raiola was named to the first team.

The awards' purpose is to recognize the nations' top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

In order to be nominated, athletes must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA at his/her current institution and must have completed at least one full calendar year at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes also must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed on the nomination form.

The senior midfielder from Topeka, Kan., carries a 3.98 GPA as a double major in Accounting and Business Management and started 21 games for the Wildcats in 2018, scoring one goal and picking up six assists on the year.

This award marks the ninth time that a Baker University athlete has earned this honor and just the third time that a men's soccer player has won this award.

Previous NAIA Academic All-Americans include, Josh Rydberg (Men's Soccer), Jordan Dolbin (Women's Soccer), Katie Thurbon (Women's Track and Field), Aaron Caldwell (Men's Track and Field), Lindsey Mateer (Women's Golf), Logan Brettell (Football), Olivia Brees (Softball) and now Austin Halsey (Men's Soccer) twice.
