Late Goal Trips Up (RV) Baker in 1-0 Loss at Graceland
LAMONI, Iowa - (RV) Baker dropped its second straight conference road match with a 1-0 loss at Graceland on Saturday night, giving the Wildcats back-to-back road setbacks for the first time this season.
The Yellowjackets broke the scoreless deadlock with a goal in the 80th minute to knock off BU and continue their excellent track record at home this year with GU's only loss in Lamoni coming against No. 8 William Penn.
Baker owned a slight advantage in both shots (13-11) and corner kicks (4-2), while each side's keeper tallied exactly five saves in the match. Reilly Marlow-Jones, Evans Osei Amankwah and Jacob Thomas all had two shots for BU with both of Thomas' going towards goal.
The first half didn't feature very many scoring chances for either team with the Wildcats being held to just two shots in the half, while Graceland had the only corner kick of the first 45 minutes.
After a scoreless first half, Baker earned its first corner kick of the match within the first few minutes of the second period. The set piece resulted with Utah Hester nearly popping one high enough to get over the GU keeper.
Midway through the second half, Marlow-Jones had back-to-back opportunities end in heartbreak, first with a free-kick shot on the edge of the box that was lifted out on a leaping save by the GU goalie and then on an 18-yard curler that clanged off the post.
With a draw on the doorstep, it was a BU yellow card that allowed for the Yellowjackets to set up a free kick near the edge of their box. A quality cross on the ensuing kick paid off with a game-winning header from Guillermo Tejada putting Graceland up 1-0 with 10 minutes left to play.
The Wildcats would send up four shots down the stretch, looking for a late equalizer, but the final score held as BU was shutout for just the second time this season.
Boasting three wins against top-25 teams this year, Baker will take on its sixth ranked opponent of the fall with a matchup at home against No. 7 Missouri Valley on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Hartley Field.
