Wildcats Ramp Back Up at Northwest Open
Maryville, Mo. – The Baker men's and women's track and field teams competed in its first meet of 2023 and collected seven top-15 finishes at the Northwest Open on Saturday in Maryville, Mo.
Tajanique Bell and Trevor Bolden led a BU sprinters group at the one-day meet with the duo finishing in the top-15 of both the 200- and 400-meter dash in their respective races. Bell sprinted to a 12th-place finish in the 200m on a time of 26.40 seconds and finished 12th again in the 400-meter dash, clocking in at 1:02.18. Bolden tied for 14th in the 200m after recording a 22.81-second half-turn and followed up with an 11th-place finish in the 400m (51.77).
In the 600-yard run, Marah Lutz placed 13th in the women's race (1:54.41), while Jackson Stoppel (1:19.21) and Luke Persson (1:21.71) turned in a couple of top-20 finishes in the men's race with Stoppel coming in 16th and Persson in 19th.
Sophomore Rachel Sterner paced the Wildcats in the 800-meter run, finishing in 15th on a time of 2:25.56. In the distance races, Brooke Allen posted a 19:31.78 time in the 5,000-meter run to place 11th to go along with a 22nd-place finish in the 3,000-meter run (11:23.05). On the men's side, Josh Weghorst ran a 16:28.15 in the 5,000m and finished 19th.
In the field events, Darrell Alleyene marked a jump of 6.22 meters in the men's long jump which placed him 16th. Jayson Brown earned a 16th-place finish as well in the men's shot put after registering a 13.58-meter throw in the men's shot put. Quinn Nichols followed Brown in the shot in 19th after his best mark of the day came in at 13.41 meters.
The Wildcats continue the indoor season with a trip up the road to compete in the Jayhawk Classic Invitational on Friday, Jan. 27 with the meet beginning at 12 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan.
