Baker Wrestling Splits Road Duals at Central Methodist
FAYETTE, Mo. – The Baker men's and women's wrestling teams split its midweek duals against Central Methodist with the men winning their dual, 23-21 and the women falling, 27-18 on Wednesday night in Fayette, Mo.
CMU 27, BU 18
Despite a couple of open spots, the No. 20 Wildcats went 3-4 in their contested matches against CMU, who ranks 11th nationally as a team, with top-20 matchups in four of the seven bouts.
After a Central Methodist forfeit to open the dual, Baker won the first three matches to go up 18-0 over the Eagles. Kylee Slyter started things off with a quick pin in her wrestle at 109 pounds before No. 13 Kylie Robledo upset No. 8 Hannah Hall with a 7-2 decision in the 116-pound match to exact some revenge from this past weekend's Spire Classic, where the two Heart grapplers faced off in the championship match.
No. 18 Katherine Heath earned another top-15 victory for the Wildcats as she won by decision over the Eagles' Allison Hynes, who ranks 15th nationally.
Central Methodist would go on to take the next four matches and – with Baker open spots at 170 and 191 pounds – secure its dual win over Baker, 27-18.
On a night filled with top-20 matchups, the premier event came in the 155-pound match where No. 3 Kaylynn Albrecht went up against top-ranked Caitlyn Davis. The two wrestlers would go the distance in the bout with Davis edging out a 10-7 decision.
BU 23, CMU 21
The men's dual featured quite a conference showdown between No. 17 Baker and (RV) Central Methodist with the Wildcats winning four of their five matches by decision to dispatch the Eagles, 23-21.
Central Methodist won the first two matches of the dual by pin to take an early 12-0 advantage before Joseph Triscornia (141) and Dallas Koelzer (149) snagged the next two matches to tack on six points for BU.
After the Eagles picked up a decision at 157 and a CMU forfeit at 165, Joey Ewalt rolled to a 15-0 tech fall victory in his match at 174 pounds. Brett Bober followed with another three points for the Wildcats as he wrestled to an 8-2 decision in his 184-pound match.
At 197 pounds, fifth-ranked Malachi Karibo defeated 18th-ranked Elijah Hynes by a 7-5 decision to close out Baker's scoring for the night at 23 team points.
Up next for Baker, the women head to the Grand View Open on Saturday, Feb. 4 and the men return to the mat on Tuesday, Feb. 7 for a dual at Iowa Wesleyan at 5 p.m.
