Wildcats Sweep Duals at IWU and USM; Women Earn Top-Four Marks at Warrior Open
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Baker wrestling capped a busy, but fruitful final week of regular-season competitions as both the men's and women's teams swept their midweek duals at Iowa Wesleyan and Saint Mary before the women closed things out at the Warrior Open on Sunday.
On Feb. 7, the Baker women made the most of its wins in the dual against the Tigers with Kaylynn Albrecht's tech fall win at 155 pounds and Elisa Robinson's pin in the 191-pound match – along with a couple of IWU forfeits – boosting the Wildcats to a 25-21 victory. Albrecht made quick work in her match to earn the 10-0 tech fall and, with the score 21-20 in favor of IWU, Robinson earned a pin to secure the win for BU.
The Wildcats went 6-2 in their matches against the Tigers in the men's dual, highlighted by a couple of pins from Joey Hancock (165) and Roman Bushek (197). Saoul Prado (125) opened the dual with a 7-4 decision before Joseph Triscornia won by major decision at 141 pounds and Dallas Koelzer added another three points on a 3-2 decision. In the 184-pound match, Brett Bober won via tech fall, while Bushek followed with the pin at 197 to cap the night for BU, 33-12.
Following their duals in Iowa, the Wildcats headed to Leavenworth, Kan. on Feb. 9 to take on Saint Mary where the Baker women won by a score of 38-12 and the Wildcat men completed the sweep of the Spires with a 35-20 victory to cap a 4-for-4 week for BU in its final regular-season duals.
At the Warrior Open on Sunday, Albrecht added her latest individual championship after coming out on top of the 155-pound bracket. She made easy work of her competition in Fremont, Neb., winning all four of her matches – three by tech fall and a pin in the quarterfinal match. At 116 pounds, Kylie Robledo took third after she rattled off four straight wins to close out her tournament, punctuated by a pin in her placement match. Mariam Shariq picked up four wins as well as she wrestled her way to the third-place match of the 136-pound bracket. Shariq earned pins in three of her four victories and won by tech fall to secure her top-four finish.
The Heart of America Athletic Conference Wrestling Championships are up next for both Baker teams as the men will compete in the conference tournament on Feb. 18, followed by the women's championship on Feb. 25. Both competitions are being hosted by William Penn in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
