Wildcats Split Home Heart Doubleheader with Missouri Baptist
BALDWIN CITY - Hosting their first doubleheader of the season, the Baker men's and women's wrestling teams came away with a split in a set of duals against Heart of America opponent Missouri Baptist here Wednesday night in the Collins Center.
The 19th-ranked BU women's team rolled to its third straight dual win, defeating the Spartans, 33-7 in the first match of the night. With a double open at 103 pounds, the Wildcats claimed all but one of the nine weight classes, with MBU's lone win coming at the midway point at 138 pounds.
Kylie Robledo opened the competition with a quick 10-0 tech fall at 110 pounds to spark the first of four straight wins for BU. After a couple of MBU forfeits, Aileya Sath added another tech fall at 131 pounds to make it an 18-0 lead for Baker.
Following another Spartans open at 145 pounds, Margaret Jordan (160), Nevaeh Wardlow (180), and Madeleine Stone (207) closed things out with three straight victories. Jordan tacked on one final tech fall, while Wardlow and Stone each battled to a pair of ranked decision wins in the last two matches.
Wardlow, who ranks No. 13 nationally, battled back to defeat MBU's Kenlee Fish, who is No. 17. Meanwhile, the 13th-ranked Stone edged out a low-scoring upset over MBU's 11th-ranked wrestler in Loghan Sumner on a 3-1 decision.
In the men's dual, the Wildcats squared off against a tough Spartans side that featured five nationally ranked wrestlers. BU won two of the bouts, but made Missouri Baptist earn its way to victory, with four of the matches being decided on minor decisions.
Saoul Prado put Baker in front first with a 15-4 major decision win in the first match of the dual. After MBU took the next seven, Kevin Lund gave the home crowd some excitement with a pin in the 197-pound match.
Both teams will be in action later this week as well, with the men's team actually making a quick turnaround and traveling up the road to face Benedictine tomorrow (Jan. 15) at 7 p.m. in Atchison, Kan.
The Baker women will head to the York Open on Saturday, Jan. 17, with the one-day tournament slated to start at 9 a.m. in York, Neb.
