No. 25 Baker Sweeps Clarke in Home DH
BALDWIN CITY, Kansas – The Baker University softball team hosted another Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday, as they defeated Clarke University, 13-0 in five innings in game one and 6-4 in game two.
The Wildcats improve to 36-11 overall and 25-9 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play, while the Pride fall to 17-27 overall and 15-17 in conference action.
In game one, the Wildcats scored its most runs in a game since February 10 when they defeated University of St. Mary, 14-1.
Baker hit four home runs in the game, two each from Riley Swickard and Lydia Konrade. The home runs were the seventh and eighth of the season for Konrade, tying the school record for home runs in a single season, as Brooke Allen had eight in 2011.
Olivia Brees went all five innings in the circle and earned the shut out win, as she struck out 10 batters and allowed just five hits.
The Wildcat offense had 15 hits in the game, with three each from Swickard and Konrade.
Swickard scored three runs in the contest, while Konrade, Hannah Flynn, Eva Gonzalez and Makayla Stromenger all crossed the plate twice.
In the second game, Baker put together late game heroics for the second-straight day, as they trailed Clarke, 4-2, in the Bottom of the 6th inning, then Megan Porche singled to deep right field scoring Kristina Slayton, then Swickard singled to center field scoring Rachel Wheeler.
Stephanie Cardona then singled in the infield and scored both Rees and Swickard to give Baker the 6-4 lead.
Teagan Louthan went six innings and allowed just three earned runs and received the win, as Olivia Brees closed the door in the 7th inning and earned the save. She had bases loaded with two outs and struck out the final batter for the save.
The Wildcats will close out the regular season on Sunday, as they host Mount Mercy on Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. inside Cavaness Field.
