Wildcats Bounce Back with Saturday Road Sweep at Valley
MARSHALL, Mo. - After falling at home last week to a top-15 team, Baker softball responded with a pair of excellent wins on the road in a conference sweep of Missouri Valley on Saturday in Marshall, Mo.
The Wildcats capitalized on back-to-back strong pitching performances courtesy of their two starters in Marshall - Kira Baker and Jordyn Beck. Baker tossed a one-run gem in a 4-1 victory in game one before Beck finished off the doubleheader sweep with a 6-2 win in the nightcap.
In the first game of the series, Baker allowed just one run on four hits, while striking out four for her fourth win of the spring.
Ashlee Jackman got off to a blistering start, legging out an RBI triple in the top of the first to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead before turning around and clubbing her team-best fourth homer of the season with a solo shot in the fourth.
A double steal between Miley Rowe and Lily Rowe allowed for Miley Rowe to slide in safely to make it a three-run advantage.
Making her first plate appearances since her freshman season, Kira Baker recorded her first career RBI with a sac fly to center field to cap the 4-1 victory.
BU carried over its offensive momentum into the nightcap, scoring all six of its runs in the first four innings to win on a comfortable 6-2 score.
Sydney Kill drove in a pair of runs in the top of the first to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead before MVC cut the lead in half in the bottom of the frame. Gracie Gallagher added an RBI single in the second before Jackman smacked another extra-base hit with an RBI double to center in the third.
Jackman eventually came around to score in the third as well before Gallagher's second RBI of the game made it a 6-1 lead for BU in the fourth.
Beck tallied five strikeouts and allowed just one earned run for the seventh win of her debut season with the Wildcats. The junior transfer from Indian Hills CC has won seven of her nine starts this spring with 62 innings pitched, 47 strikeouts and eight complete games.
Up next, Baker will stay on the road next weekend with a long-distance Iowa road trip to take on Clarke on Saturday, March 28, in Dubuque and Mount Mercy on Sunday, March 29, in Cedar Rapids.
