Wildcats Earn Big Win Over Park on Wednesday, 62-49
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – Winning their 10th game of the season, the Baker women's basketball team defeated Park University on Wednesday night, 62-49.
Defense was key for the Baker women on Wednesday night, holding Park to just 25.9 percent shooting in the game, making just 15 field goals on 58 shots. Offensively, Baker had three players score in double figures with Ainsley Tolson leading the team with 15 points. Leah Van Weelden added 11 points of her own, while Chassidy Weathers got in on the scoring with 10 points.
Emina Hadzihusejnovic led Baker with 13 rebounds in the game, while Tolson had six assists and Sophia Barrett racked up four steals.
With the score tied 6-6 in the first five minutes, Baker was able to take the lead on a layup from Tolson. Baker then held that lead for the remainder of the quarter, taking a 14-12 lead into the second quarter of play.
Early in the second quarter, Park had taken the lead and stretched it to 24-15, but a three from Tolson ended the run and cut the lead down to just six points, 24-18. Over the next couple of minutes, Baker held Park scoreless and a huge three from Chassidy Weathers helped the Wildcats regain the lead, 25-24.
The Baker defense held the Pirates scoreless for a full five minutes late in the second quarter as the Wildcats held a 32-24 lead with 1:30 to play until halftime. Park made one last run before the end of the half and cut the lead down to 32-30 heading into the locker room.
Baker continued to grow their lead in the third quarter and a layup from Leah Van Weelden gave the Wildcats a nine-point lead at 46-37 with 1:34 left in the third. The scoring did not stop there as Baker held onto a 50-37 margin with just one quarter of play left.
The Wildcats never gave the Pirates a chance to get back into the game and despite cutting the lead to nine, the Wildcats went on to win the game, 62-49.
Baker is now 10-11 on the season and 6-10 in Heart of America play. They will be back on the road on Saturday when they take on Grand View at 2 p.m., in Des Moines, Iowa.
