Wildcats Compete in Midweek Heart Duals
BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The No. 18 Baker women's wrestling team competed in a total of three duals this week, facing off against Heart of America Athletic Conference teams No. 2 Grand View, No. 14 Missouri Valley and (RV) William Penn.
The Wildcats fell to Missouri Valley, 26-20 on Wednesday before going on to split the triangular dual at Grand View on Thursday with a 32-15 victory over the Statesmen and a 41-5 loss against GVU.
MVC 26, BU 20
The Wildcats went 5-3 in their matches against MVC with open BU spots in the final two weight classes of the dual. Three of Baker's wins came via tech fall to go along with a first-period pin and a decision for its 20-point outing.
To begin the night, Kylie Hernandez won an exciting 101-pound bout on a 14-11 decision to give the Wildcats a quick advantage. After a Vikings pin, 116-pounder Kylie Robledo earned BU's first tech fall of the dual to tie things up at 7-7.
With Missouri Valley taking the next two matches to lead 16-7, the Wildcats responded by winning three straight matches with Mariam Shariq's pin in the first period of the 143-pound match bringing the dual to a deadlock at 16-16. Abbie Jones (136) and Kaylynn Albrecht (155) had the other two tech falls for Baker as Albrecht's win pushed BU ahead, 20-16 before the two open spots capped the dual at 26-20 in favor of MVC.
GVU 41, BU 5
The No. 2-ranked Vikings swept the first seven weight classes with a couple of pins at 109 and 116 pounds boosting their total. Albrecht had the lone victory for BU in the dual as she defeated Madison Diaz, who ranks ninth nationally at 143 pounds, on an exciting 16-12 decision in the 155-pound bout. Robledo (123) and Jones (136) each earned a bonus point in their respective duals.
BU 32, WPU 15
In Thursday's nightcap, the Wildcats went 4-0 in their contested matches against William Penn to claim the dual win. Baker won three of the matches by tech fall and added a pin in the 123-pound match.
After two WPU open spots at 101 and 109, Katherine Heath wrestled to an 11-0 tech fall win at 116 pounds before Robledo's pin at 123 put the Wildcats ahead, 19-0. Jones (136) and Albrecht (155) tallied the other two tech falls for Baker to close out the busy two-day stretch with a 32-15 victory.
Up next, Baker hosts its Senior Night on Wednesday, Jan. 25 with a dual against Midland starting at 5 p.m.
