Women’s Wrestling Slips Past Spires to Split Midweek Home Duals

BALDWIN CITY - After winning all three of its duals to start the new year, No. 20 Baker women's wrestling earned a split in its set of home duals on Wednesday night in the Collins Center, including a victory over non-conference opponent (RV) Saint Mary.

The Wildcats fell to No. 2 Grand View, 43-3, in the first dual of the night before pulling out a hard-fought, 31-15, victory over the Spires in the nightcap to salvage a split in its second straight home Wednesday dual.

Chloe Herrick (117), Kylee Slyter (124), Aileya Sath (131), McKenna Haltom (145), Hailee Crosland (160), Nevaeh Wardlow (180) and Madeleine Stone (207) all earned the victories for BU against Saint Mary.

After the Spires opened with back-to-back tech falls, Herrick picked up a pin late in the first round at 117 pounds to put the Wildcats on the scoreboard. With a couple of USM forfeits and a pin, Haltom came away with a key win in the 145-pound match, eeking out a 4-2 decision to bring the overall score to 18-14 in favor of BU.

Crosland battled to a second consecutive decision win for the 'Cats, tacking on a 5-2 decision at 160 pounds to seal the match as two more forfeits from the Spires in the final two classes settled Baker's double-digit victory.

Up next, Baker heads out for a long road trip this weekend, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind. to compete in Indiana Tech's Warrior Open on Jan. 23-24. The tournament kicks off on Friday with opening-day action set to start at 1 p.m. (CT), followed by an 8 a.m. (CT) start for Saturday's finale.
