Massey Wins 5K Title; Women Finish Eighth, Men 10th at Heart Indoor Championships
MARYVILLE, Mo. – Aidan Massey captured the men's 5,000-meter title to highlight Baker track and field's outing at the Heart of America Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Maryville, Mo.
Joining Massey on the podium, Tavius Woodall took second in the men's 200-meter dash while Tajanique Bell sprinted to a third-place finish in the women's 60-meter hurdles.
In the team standings, Baker women (30) finished eighth and the men (29) finished a point behind Graceland in 10th. Central Methodist came out champions in a tight women's competition while the Grand View men's team won its championship by a comfortable 57-point margin.
Massey legged out a 5K time of 15:20.67 to cross the finish line first as the Olathe West product claimed an individual championship in the race on Friday.
Woodall notched a personal record in the 200m, clocking a 21.83 to finish as runner-up in the event. He added a fourth-place showing the 60-meter dash with another season best, 6.89 seconds.
Bell knocked a few ticks off her 60H mark from Friday's prelims to earn the bronze in the finals with a time of 8.66 seconds. The senior sprinter capped her impressive weekend by winning fourth in the 60m on a season-high 7.85 seconds.
Distance runner Brooke Allen earned a pair of fifth-place finishes in the women's 3K and 5K races. Allen registered a personal-best time (18:47.84) in Friday's 5K before following up with a 10:55.61 time in the 3K on Saturday.
Trevor Bolden paced the Wildcats in the 400-meter dash, coming in just under 50-second mark (49.99) to take fifth in the event. Bolden placed seventh in the 200m with a time of 22.40.
In the women's 800-meter run, Rachel Sterner ran a two-lap time of 2:24.77 to place seventh. Naomi Kilson (7.97) added a seventh-place finish in the women's 60m race after running turning in a PR performance in the prelims on Friday where she ran a 7.88.
A couple of Baker women relay teams picked up top-seven finishes with the distance medley relay team of Jana Landreth, Lauren Havlik, Sterner and Allen coming in fifth (13:20.52), while the 4x800-meter relay (Sterner, Landreth, Haley Thompson, Sam Slife) finished in seventh.
Both teams will now take individuals to Brookings, S.D., on March 3-5, to compete in the NAIA Indoor National Championships.
