Wildcats Drop Midweek Road Game at Benedictine
ATCHISON, Kan. - After playing back-to-back home games to start the new year, Baker women's basketball fell on the road at Benedictine, 84-39, on Wednesday night in BU's first road game in nearly a month.
Baker ran into a tough Ravens squad in Atchison that controlled the game from the get-go, holding the Wildcats to single-digit scoring in two quarters while clearing 20 points in all but one of their own.
Baker was limited to a poor-shooting night, going 15-of-54 from the floor and making just four free throws in the game. Meanwhile, the Ravens shot 50 percent in the first half, made eight 3-pointers, and forced 28 turnovers defensively.
Gabby Rose reached double figures for the 12th time this season, leading BU with 12 points and dishing out three assists. Rose was joined by 10 other Wildcats, who all scored in the game, with Lydia Cobler finishing with five points in her 14 minutes of action.
Kennedy Bryan opened up the game's scoring with a three to give Baker a 3-0 lead before the Ravens found their rhythm and quickly reeled off a 19-2 run. Cobbler buried in a second triple for BU late in the period as Benedictine led 21-8 after a quarter of play.
Rose and Skye Pepp each chipped in buckets as the Wildcats tried to narrow the deficit in the second quarter. The Ravens continued to add to their lead, though, hitting back-to-back threes to stretch their lead to 27 points.
Down the stretch, Rose got a couple of shots to fall and teamed up with a Cobler for a pick-and-roll, which saw Cobler finish off the nice set with an easy layup.
Benedictine posted its best quarter defensively in the third quarter, holding Baker to just four points in the frame with Rose's basket at the five-minute mark serving as BU's only points until her layup in the final seconds.
In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats tallied three 3-pointers with Rihanna Blanchard, Maddie Wilbeck and Kaylee Heinen all knocking down a shot from deep. Nevaeh Leeks and Hallie Smires each contributed as well, with Leeks hitting the final shot of the game.
Up next, Baker will return to the Collins Center on Jan. 17 to host its third-straight home Saturday matchup, taking on Graceland at 2 p.m. in Baldwin City.
