Baker Tennis Starts Spring Season Strong with Busy Home Weekend

LAWRENCE, Kan. - The Baker men's and women's tennis teams opened up their 2026 spring seasons by hosting a set of home matches on both Saturday and Sunday this past weekend in Lawrence, Kan.

The Wildcats pulled off a season-opening sweep over Mount Marty and Avila on Saturday with the men's squad defeating the Lancers, 7-0, and the Eagles, 4-0. Meanwhile, the BU women earned a 5-1 victory over MMU in their first outing of the spring, followed by a 4-0 win over Avila.

Returning to Lawrence Genesis South on Sunday, the Baker women opened the day with a 5-2 victory over Saint Mary before both teams fell to Concordia by scores of 4-1.

Newcomer Laura Cabello Aguilera won all four of her singles matches in her Wildcats debut, while Dayna Steadman, Arizbe Espinosa and Emma Cain each had multiple victories on the weekend as well. For the BU men, Porter Lee, Carlos Alcala and Jhon Ramirez all tallied two wins in a solid all-around showing for the Wildcats.

Baker will be back in action this weekend in Lawrence, hosting matches against Bethany (12 p.m.) and Evangel (4 p.m.) on Saturday, Feb. 28, before finishing up with a matchup against Texas Wesleyan on Sunday, March 1, starting at 1 p.m. Saturday's match versus Bethany will be held at Rock Chalk Park, while both the Evangel and Texas Wesleyan matchups will be played at Genesis Lawrence South.
